Major Research Institute

The Animal Research Institute at Kibbutz Lahav is a major resource for medical and agricultural research providing pigs as animal models for researchers in a wide variety of fields and disciplines. The Institute, the largest of its kind in Israel, serves university and government research bodies as well as private companies engaged in developing innovative procedures, food additives for animals, medicines and medical instrumentation. All of the Animal Research Institute's facilities and activities are approved and monitored in accordance with ISO9001 (2008).

Physiologically close to human beings, pigs are invaluable in advancing medical research. At the Animal Research Institute, they are bred and raised under strictly controlled conditions closely supervised by an onsite veterinarian. In addition to supplying pigs of virtually any size and weight, from one kilogram to 250 kg., the Institute also provides researchers with organs, tissues and embryos. In all its activities the Institute stringently observes the highest ethical standards.

Skilled Personnel

Institute staff includes a veterinarian, scientific manager, two physicians, specialists in genetics and hematology, and three employees working directly with the animals. Staff members have acquired extensive expertise over the years and prior to any experiment carried out at the Institute, they assist researchers to develop the appropriate experimental protocol. Their skills and knowledge in handling pigs play an important role in helping researchers arrive at precise results in as efficient manner as possible.

Institute Facilities
Operating room – The largest such facility in Israel is capable of accommodating several researchers and operations on a number of animals at the same time. The operating room includes sophisticated anesthetic and breathing systems as well as instrumentation for measuring various physiological parameters and for implementing a wide range of surgical procedures as well as endoscopies and colonoscopies.

Acclimatization Houses

In the Institute's two acclimatization houses, animals are held under controlled conditions for 36 hours or more prior to the operation and during recovery. In experiments dealing with medications, the houses allow easy access for follow up observations. The two houses can accommodate as many animals as needed simultaneously.

Blood Laboratory

The laboratory separates blood and blood types and processes skin tissue for research into the penetration of medicines administered by way of the skin.
